I think you're right; I think it means life out of balance. And I believe
it's also an entirely image-driven film, a time-lapse photographic
tour/critique of America. And *Powaqqatsi* was the follow-up examining the
Third World, if I remember correctly.
 
And how about Maya Deren's experimental films? Not modern enough?
