This question has been central to Richard Dyer's work. His two books on
the subject are STARS and HEAVENLY BODIES. He has also written several
essays since these two works, which can be found in his collections like
THAT"S ENTERTAINMENT (?). He also has a more recent book whose title I
can't really recall right now.
