I'd like some suggestions if anyone has some to offer. I often teach an
undergraduate, General Education course in "Visual Literacy." This is a
course in "how to look at 2-dimensional images," from classical painting to
film to video.

In the past, I've relied mainly on two texts: VISUAL LITERACY by Deborah
 Curtiss,
and John Berger's WAYS OF SEEING. The first (which still wasn't an ideal text
for my class) is now out of print, and the second seems increasingly dated to
me.

I wonder if people on the list might have other suggestions. The course is
fairly rudimentary. While I do get some art majors and others, the students
are usually not too visually sophisticated. Course material includes
discussion of the physical aspects of sight; a rudimentary introduction to
semiotics; and some discussion of technical aspects of different media, from
paint to computers.

Thanks.
