Are you talking about "reality programs" such as COPS or are you interested
in the "social construction of reality and television viewing"? If it is
the former you are correct--there are a few academic articles (search
Journal of Broadcasting and Electronic Media). The latter is addressed in
numerous texts and articles. I'm doing a study concerning reality
programming and the documentary and audience perceptions--ala, blurring of
the lines between entertainment and information.

I am preparing some lectures as well as a series of articles on the subject
of reality TV. My problem is that, apart from an enormous amount of
journalistic discussion on this new 'genre', I can't find too much academic
articles or books on the subject. In fact, I have only found three texts:

Richard Killborn:
'How real can you get?': Recent developments in 'reality' television. In:
European Journal of Communication (SAGE, London), Vol. 9 (1994), pp.
421-439.

John Corner:
Television as public communication. Chapter 1 in: John Corner: Television
form and public adress (Edward Arnold, London), 1995.

Laura Grindstaff:
Trashy or transgressive? 'Reality TV' and the politics of social control.
In: T:vc Thresholds: viewing culture (University of California Santa
Barbara), Vol. 9 (1995), Section 3.
You can find this article online at:
http://www.arts.ucsb.edu/~tvc/section3/11.Tvc.v9.sect3.Grindstaff.html

Does anyone know other books or articles on the subject of reality TV (and
'emotion TV'), or know of people in the academic field of film and
television studies who are also working on the subject? There must be
some...
