in truth lots of film theory has reasonable claims to philosophical
seriousness . . . so does fred jameson, who has written about film, most notably
in his long review of rothman's book on hitchcock . . . certainly kracauer has
to be included in such a listing . . . but the name that comes to mind
pre-eminently, the one who is not a film person but a profesional philosopher
who nonetheless has devoted lots of his most important work to discussing
cinema is, of course, stanley cavell
