Flannery O'Connor's "Late Encounter with the Enemy" draws on the premiere
of "Gone With the Wind"--the hoopla ("an usherette in a Confederate cap and
little short skirt"), if not the film itself. Also of interest: Nathaneal
Nathanael West's "Day of the Locust" has its apocalyptic ending outside
the world premiere of a Hollywood film at "Kahn's Persian Palace Theatre."
"At the sight of their heroes and heroines, the crowd would turn demoniac . . .
A young man with a portable microphone was describing the scene. His rapid
hysterical voice was like that of a revivalist preacher whipping his
congregation toward the ecstasy of fits. . . . "Somebody hollered, 'Here
comes Gary Cooper,' and them wham!""
