It is with interest, reading these comments on dead man walking and
i couldn't agree more with rand at buffalo
let us remember that as penn's attorney stated in the film, that he stood
before the board in his final appeal because he was unable to afford
a better attorney who in turn could hire a bunch of law students to find
something to overturn his conviction and remove him from death row-it
had nothing to do with his ethnicity but it was a question of money to
put it bluntly(it must be inferred that the other criminal had an attorney
who was either more persuasive etc in garnering his client a life in prison
sentence)
having known victims of violent crime, it was satisfying to see penn's
character give his life as he said so that the victims families might be
able to go on living and the recognition that killing is wrong
in the LA times that i believe someone on the list referred to, tim robbins
and sister helen wrote articles defending their film which the individual
failed to mention
i did not see walking as a mainstream film
what set tim robbins'work apart from say gibson's man without a face,
was that robbins'own personal beliefs never interferred with his telling
so fine a story and that's what rendered walking so powerfrul, so effective
this story will stay with me forever
it is an emotionally difficult film to set through and i think robbins'
forces us to understand and to come to an understanding about what we
believe to some extent as eastwood did a few years ago in unforgiven,
rare films indeed
just a thought
