Further information: The complete <Fanny and Alexander> is available on
laser disc from Japan (in Swedish with Japanese subtitles). On my TV, the
aspect ratio is 1.50:1 or maybe 1.55.1. It could be as much as 1.60:1.
Nothing seems to be missing on the sides, but perhaps a little bit cramped.
The difference between the two versions is (a) about 2 hours of additional
footage, (b) some rearrangement of shots and scenes, particularly in the
second half, (c) the long version is clearly articulated into a Prologue, 5
Acts, and an Epilogue, (d) one scene--the Bishop's whipping of
Alexander--is in part shot differently, (e) the themes of the theater and
Emilie's relationship to it are greatly amplified. It is a shame the
longer version is not otherwise available, for it is an even greater film
than the theatrical version.
