A few short stories-to-film that come to mind are the films SMOOTH TALK
(from "Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?" by Joyce Carol Oates),
THE HEARTBREAK KID (From "A Change of Plan" by Bruce Jay Friedman), and
THE MOST DANGEROUS GAME (from a story of the same name by Richard
Connell. Robert Altman's SHORT CUTS was taken from nine Raymond Carver
stories. Hitchcock's REAR WINDOW was based on a short story of the same
name by Cornell Woolrich. Kubrick's 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY is an
expansion of "The Sentinel" by Arthur C. Clarke. John Ford was particularly
fond of adapting short stories. These include THE MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY
VALANCE (same title, by Dorothy M. Johnson), THE QUIET MAN (same title, by
Maurice Walsh), and STAGECOACH ("Stage to Lordsburg" by Ernest Haycox).
