This may be only tangential to the original inquiry but one Peckinpah
biography has some interesting details on the edited version of The Wild
Bunch. The film had already been released when the studio decided to
make the cuts that were "restored" in the recent rerelease (i'm using
quotes since that version was available on 16mm in the mid-80s). So
they sent editing directions out directly to the local distribution
points with the result that there was a wide discrepancy between each
actual print. Some were completely uncut, some were cut according to
the studio's wishes and some had even more drastic cuts.
