Dear All

Regarding the recent correspondence about passion in Paris, to
which I contributed a sort of quiz question, the much re-made
movie I had in mind was (of course) The Phantom of the Opera -
- though now I come to think of it, the Phantom is, in fact,
motivated by a combination of sexual obsession and twisted
revenge (a fairly standard horror-story motivation, I should
think).

Thinking about this subject -- sexual obsession in the Frencg
capital -- I realize that there's another popular movie,
that's been re-made several times (three? four?) that also
fits the bill: even more than the Phantom, this is a tale of
unrequited sexual desire. It was first made in 1923, remade in
1939; it's based on a more respectable literary source than
Gaston Leroux's Phantom of the Opera; it hasn't been made into
a musical, so far as I know, but I believe I've heard rumours
of a forthcoming Disney animated version (can this be true?).
Any takers?
