Krin Gabbard asks about diegetic music that becomes extra-diegetic (I,
perhaps like other on the list, have only just learned these terms
thanks to the ongoing discussion, and I feel very sophisticated tossing
them off like this). It seems as though there must be countless
examples, but I can only think of an opposite case: in the movie DIVA
some lush piece of classical music on the soundtrack accompanies our
hero as he rides his motorbike through the streets; then he pulls over,
clicks off his portable tape player and the music abruptly stops. It
takes a moment to realize that it was coming from his tape player all
along.
I wonder if this "trick" is more or less common than the case Krin
describes.
