To Whitney--
Another Canadian film of interest is STRANGERS IN GOOD COMPANY, about a busload
of women who become stranded in the countryside when their bus breaks down. The
group at first looks almost like a parody of multiculturalism--there's a native
English Canadian, a French Canadian, an English emigree, a black woman, an
Native American, a lesbian and a nun! But as they work on the bus and/or wait
for rescue, the women revisit their pasts and discover each others' lives
through conversation. I believe that the actresses were all "amateurs" and
that their real lives are detailed through their characters, but the resulting
film is comic, touching and warm.
