If you're interested in a starter book that deals with *both* film
and US-style television, then I humbly submit:

Jeremy G. Butler, TELEVISION: CRITICAL METHODS AND APPLICATIONS
      (Belmont, CA: Wadsworth, 1994).

It features a chapter introducing several major critical
approaches to film/TV.

----------
Number of the Best Actor/Actress Oscar nominees 1986-94 who played
a mentally or physically disabled person: 9.
