MOVING IMAGE ARCHIVISTS TO MEET IN BOSTON

Moving image archivists, curators, preservationists,
scholars, and others interested in film and video
preservation will meet at the Omni Parker House in Boston,
November 15 to 19, for the 1994 Conference of the
Association for Moving Image Archivists (AMIA).

The five-day Conference, hosted by the WGBH Educational
Foundation, will feature sessions devoted to a variety of
topics and perspectives on moving image preservation,
including the History of the Film Archives Movement in North
America, National Strategies for Moving Image Preservation,
National Moving Image Databases, Copyright and Educational
Access, Restoring Videotapes, Local News Archives, Archives
and Emerging Production and Distribution Technologies, and
Changing Ethics of film and Video Preservation, among many
others. The Conference will also include a Basic Training
Workshop for those new to the field.

Evening events will include a reception at WGBH-TV and
screenings of archival film footage at The John F. Kennedy
Library.

In addition to the seminars and screenings, the 1994
Conference will feature the first AMIA Recognition Award
Luncheon. The Recognition Award was established by AMIA
this year to recognize special achievement in preservation
and archival work related to moving images, and to promote
excellence in the field. The Award's first recipient will
be announced in October.

AMIA is a professional association established to provide a
means for cooperation among individuals concerned with the
collection, preservation, exhibition and use of moving image
materials. The objectives of AMIA are to exchange
information, promote archival activities and professional
standards, facilitate research, and encourage public
awareness of film and video preservation.

On the final day of the Conference, the New England
Archivists (NEA), a regional association affiliated with the
Society of American Archivists, will hold its annual
meeting, also at the Parker House. The NEA's programs will
focus on moving image preservation, and AMIA members are
encouraged to attend the session. This cooperative
arrangement will provide a unique opportunity for the NEA
and AMIA to exchange ideas and compare notes.

The cost of full conference registration (postmarked by
October 14, 1994) is $185 for AMIA and NEA members, and $215
for non-members. After October 14, the cost is $215
(members) and $245 (non-members). Single-day registration
is $70 for members and $80 (non-members) if paid in advance.
On-site registration is $80 per day (members) and $90 per
day (non-members)

Those seeking registration forms, or further information,
should contact the AMIA Secretariat at the National Center
for Film and Video Preservation, P.O. 27999, 2021 North
