Thanks to Jeremy Butler for his gentle correctives to my hasty note, for
"rehabilitating" Dovzhenko and rightly questioning the loose application of
"feminist" to Bed and Sofa. I do think the film has been overlooked, though.
Yes, there are filmmakers and academics who know the film, and it's been used
in courses, but I think Eisenstein, Pudovkin, Vertov and a few others continue
to take up 90% of textbook space and screen time in film courses when the topic
is Soviet film in the twenties. And Bed and Sofa is a film that I find many
film students and film lovers are surprised and intrigued to hear about.
