It seems to me that Bertrand Blier's films like Going Places or
Get Out Your Handkerchiefs fall into this arena.  Individuals strike out
in their own eccentric direction, flying in the face of society, in
their search for happiness.  Society is like a desert in these films,
through which our thirsty protaganists wander, detached, searching for water.
