Dr. George Gerbner will discuss television's contribution to violence in
society and will offer advocacy as a solution to the domination of the
media mainstream in his keynote address to open the Red River Communication
Conference at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 20, in the NDSU Newman Center Social
Hall.  Gerbner's address is free and open to the public.  Gerbner heads the
Cultural Indicators research team at the Annenberg School for
Communication, U. of Penn., where he is professor of communication and dean
emeritus.  Cultural Indicators was initiated by the National Commission on
the Causes and Prevention of Violence in 1969 and consists of a continuing
comparative analysis of television in 10 countries.
 
The Red River Communication conference presents the work of 50 scholars as
well as fature presentations on controlling broadcast content, music as
communication and media literacy.  For further information or to obtain
