For Angie...

Just had a long talk with a Chinese friend about using Night and Fog
vs. Garden of the Finzi-Continis for educating people about the
Holocaust. Having viewed both titles a number of times, I've always
felt that N&F, although a must-see, documents the inherent strengths
and weaknesses of the documentary format, i.e., reality in your face.
Garden of the F-C, however, leaves the horror to the imagination of
the viewer...which is somehow even more powerful, in the long run.
This does, however, only work if the viewer is aware of the reality
of the Holocaust...I've often thought that using both films together
would be the ideal for those who are fuzzy about the facts, but also
want to experience the real emotion of the event.

N.B. I haven't seen Garden for awhile and there is a fairly explicit
sex scene, so you should definitely preview it, given the high school
age viewers.

A possible contact for more info:

John Baggaley at Concordia has written extensively on television
economics and politics. He's written over 75 articles and a number
of books on the subject. He came to Vermont to give a workshop for
librarians and I'm pretty sure he mentioned Telefilm in our
discussions. Given his work in the field, I'm sure that he could
direct you to more information...if you contact him, be sure to give
him my regards...

Go well, Martha
