Perhaps the best reason for using Van Damme is his lack of acting ability,
at least in the Stanislavskian sense.  In a film which seems primarily
concerned with the beauty of excessive, purely cinematic violence character
depth would be out of place.  What better way to emphasize the surfaces
than to employ an actor who may be incapable of depth but who is amazing on
the surface.
