HEADLINE:  Lester  Irving  Cooper  Is Dead; Produced TV Documentaries
 
 BODY:
    Lester  Irving  Cooper,  a television documentary producer for more than 30
years, died of cancer last Thursday at his apartment in Manhattan. He was 66
years old.
 
   Mr. Cooper, a native of New York City, attended Columbia and New York
Universities. He joined CBS News in 1953, and three years later moved to NBC
News, where he wrote for the ''Today'' show with Dave Garroway. After writing
and producing ''PM,'' a nightly news and talk show with Mike Wallace for the
Westinghouse Broadcasting Company, Mr. Cooper joined ABC News.
 
   He spent 20 years at ABC, producing documentaries and public affairs
programs, before retiring last year. Among the documentaries he produced were
''Hemingway's Spain: A Love Affair,'' ''The Right to Live,'' which examined
Medicare and Medicaid, and ''Can You Hear Me?'', about a deaf child.
 
   In 1976, Mr. Cooper created a children's series for ABC News called ''Animals
Animals Animals,'' which received numerous broadcasting awards.
 
   Mr. Cooper is survived by his wife, Audrey; a son, Matthew, and two
daughters, Kim and Elizabeth.
