The threshold figure for VARIETY's annual report of boxoffice champs, as
they called them, was one millon dollars distributor's gross for the
annual list, four million dollars distributor's gross for the all-time
champs list. One million dollars distributor's gross translates to
roughly three million dollars at the box office. These numbers are
usually based on the original release. Cult films of various sorts
have "legs" (in Varietyese) that carry them for a long time past the
original release figures. Unless the distributor reports a revised
figure the original release number is carried forward. Most distributors
do not bother to report revised figures, unless they are the result of
a major re-release. Again, cult films are at the low end of these
scales since many (most?) are distributed by smaller firms that operate
on day-to-day, hand-to-mouth basis (even if ultimately profitably).
