I've received a number of personal messages asking for more
information about online databases used for searching media titles
(and reviews), so I thought I would send this out to the list.

Jonathan B/CUNY: As far as I can tell, you CANNOT access Expanded
Academic Index via the internet. According to the "Gale Directory of
Databases, Volume 1: Online Databases," this index, developed by
Information Access Company (800-227-8431), is available via:

    BRS Information Technologies
    BRS/After Dark
    BRS/Colleague
    Dialog Information Services
    Knowledge Index
    Data-Star

It's also available on CD-ROM and Magnetic Tape

Generally, academic libraries will have Dialog and/or BRS available
for searching however, due to the expense, they will require that a
reference librarian do the search for you. Here at the University of
Vermont, we have paid for passwords and access Expanded Academic
through Middlebury College. You might want to check with your
library reference staff to see if they know of a route to use.

P.J. O'Connell: If I understood your question: are there any files or
print sources on frequently-asked-questions about online databases?

Not exactly, but there are print sources of searching strategies:

Armstrong, C.J., & Large, J.A. (1988). "Manual of online search
strategies". Boston, MA: G.K. Hall.

Epler, D. (1989). "Online searching goes to school". Phoenix, AZ:
Oryx Press.

For those interested in more information on the databases listed:

    Dialog Information Services 800-334-2564
    Knowledge Index 303-861-5319
    LEXIS/NEXIS 800-227-4908

Go well and happy viewing...Martha Day
