Buck,

Thanks for the explanation about government involvement with this whole
HDTV thing. I did read the whole thing :-) and I definitely see your
point. I always have mixed feelings about government control of things
like media and arts. People often argue that such control would be
limiting to creativity, but I can't imagine it would be any more so than
current practices, in which a few giant corporations get the final say and
really have more power than the government would ever have. The networks
don't even control what goes on -- the ones in control are Coca-Cola,
McDonalds, Nike, Anheuser-Busch, etc. I think in general a "universal"
system is preferable to an exclusive one, but my main gripe with HDTV,
that you did touch upon in your comment, is that by the time anything
happens with it, it will be obsolete in A LOT of ways. Space Race was a
good analogy to use, because anytime the government goes chasing after
technology for the sole purpose of showing up other countries, rather than
the technology itself -- like the first 20 years of the American space
program -- it's a disaster that not only wastes money, effort, time, etc.,
but sets the entire program in the wrong direction. I'm a bit
disappointed nobody else on the list responded to my questions about this
obsolescence problem.

Melinda
