If you are willing to accept the ultra-romanticized EXCALIBUR as a representa-

tion of the Middle Ages, you might also want to consider THE LION IN WINTER and

MONTY PYTHON AND THE HOLY GRAIL, both of which attempt in some ways to de-

romanticize and de-heroicize the period by directly dealing with our classic

stereotypes about it. In addition, they are both quite good films, witty and

cinematically interesting and even well-acted. My husband is a medievalist and

MONTY PYTHON AND THE HOLY GRAIL is his favorite film about the Middle Ages.
