I first encountered Robeson as a teenager in the 50's through his recording
of "Othello".  It was overpowering.  Perhaps it still is available.
 
At various times there were race riots connected with his appearances
in nonblack venues.  I believe one occurred in Peekskill, NY (50 miles
north of NYC on the Hudson) in 1947 or so.
