Art design for cinema is an excellent topic that needs additional research.
There was a nice piece on Jeanine Oppewal (sp?) in the latest Smithsonian
mag.  She did art for Tender Mercies, Ironweed and others.  She is a grad of
this school and we had her on campus a year or so ago.  She gave a slide
presentation on the very questions you raise.  It was terrific.
