Furthermore, I MARRIED A COMMUNIST was reputed to be Howard Hughes's loyalty
test at RKO. A number of studio directors were offered the project and worked
on it a while (like Nicholas Ray) or turned it down (like Joseph Losey).
Losey: Hughes out of spite kept me under contract and out of work when I
refused I MARRIED A COMMUNIST. He sent me a message that I had a seven-year
contract and he said, "You'll stay here for seven years and you'll never
