Representing “Home”: The Real and Imagined Spaces of Belonging

From the remote desert world of Tattooine, to the somber halls of the Klingon world Q’onos, home is a multi-faceted concept in Science Fiction. Home could a starship, as it is for the crew of the Rocinante in The Expanse. Home could be a planet sized organism, growing crystals for star travel. In the great multi-verse of Science fiction film, the definition of home is very broad indeed. 



This area welcomes proposals for 20-minute papers that focus on a diverse range of depictions and interpretations of home in science fiction film. We encourage papers that examine how home is treated and approached by the multitude of races, cultures, and species viewed in Science Fiction film. We welcome and encourage papers focused on the manner and method in which humanity reacts or experiences these multitudinous variations of home from a wide range of moving picture types; animation to live action, films from different nations and cultures, independent films, as well as films and television programming produced by major studios. 



Topics for papers might include, but are not limited to: 



Imaginings of extra-terrestrial Homes, be they vessels or more orbital constructs.

The 1950s view of the future home. 

Post-humanist expressions of home.

Home worlds as approached in Star Trek.

Home on a living breath star ship like Moya on Farscape.

The Doctor and his Tardis – does that constitute a home.

Alien home worlds as fables and myths that no one has directly experienced.

Home worlds as approached in the Star Wars saga. 

The business of future homes. 

The Invasion of Alien homes and home worlds by humans. 

International views on future homes. 





Proposals for complete panels (three related presentations) are also welcome, but they must include an abstract and contact information, including an e-mail address, for each presenter.
