The Department of Journalism and Creative Media at the University of
Alabama seeks a full-time, tenure-track assistant professor in the area of
media studies. The position begins August 16, 2017. The successful
candidate will conduct research and teach courses related to film and
television studies. Relevant areas include critical humanistic approaches
to: representations of race, gender, and sexuality; histories of media;
media industries/cultures of production; global media; new media.
Candidates should have earned a doctorate in film and media studies or a
closely related area before the start date. Candidates should demonstrate
strong potential for successful undergraduate and graduate teaching and for
developing an outstanding program of scholarship. Salary is competitive.

This department, created in 2016 with the merger of the Journalism
Department and the Telecommunication & Film Department, houses
approximately 900 undergraduate and master’s students. This department is
one of four academic units in the College of Communication and Information
Sciences. The College also includes a nationally ranked interdepartmental
doctoral program. The College’s Digital Media Center houses the
professional production facilities of the state’s Center for Public
Television and Radio, Alabama Public Radio, and WVUA 23, a full-power
commercial television station serving the Birmingham market. The College’s
School of Library and Information Studies offers an MLIS degree and an MFA
in Book Arts.

The University of Alabama, established in 1831 in Tuscaloosa, has
approximately 37,000 students, including around 5,000 graduate students in
more than 120 master’s and doctoral programs. The University has a Carnegie
classification of “Doctoral/Research Universities Extensive.” Tuscaloosa is
a university-oriented community of nearly 115,000 residents about fifty
minutes southwest of Birmingham, in the nation’s 45th television market. It
is a short drive to the Smoky Mountains, Gulf Coast beaches, New Orleans,
