HIGHLIGHTED FILMS

BAREFOOT IN THE KITCHEN (Spain), by Diego Galan

“The film is recommended for film and womens studies
undergraduates.” – Linda Frederiksen, EMRO

Reflecting changes in the political sphere, Barefoot in the
Kitchen chronicles how Spanish cinema has portrayed the evolution of
women from the 1930s to the present day, using film fragments from
180 movies. Co-produced by Pedro Almodóvars production company El
Deseo, the documentary demonstrates how landmarks in the recent
history of Spain can be directly indicated by shifts in social mores
in cinema. By the time of All About My Mother (1999), women had
turned the tables on men and on cinematic sexism, present since the
early days of the talkies.

BEAUTY FACTORY (Venezuela), by Zachary Kerschberg, Patrick Pineda

“Beauty Factory reveals the process that has won Venezuela
more international beauty crowns than any other country in the
world.” – Patrick Pineda, Director

Beauty Factory follows five contestants as they compete for the
coveted Miss Venezuela crown, offering an intimate look into the
world of beauty. This documentary takes you behind the scenes as the
girls are told how much weight they must lose, how big their breasts
should be, what diet fits them, the length and color of their hair,
their gym routine and even what plastic surgeries they need to get.
In a country rife with poverty and violence, success in the pageant
can give the girls stability and success. These are smart, savvy
women who are using their beauty as a launching pad for something
greater. But how far will they go to succeed?

YOANI’S TRIP (Brazil), by Peppe Siffredi, Raphael Bottino

“An unprecedented look at the first visit to Brazil of one of the
most controversial women of the internet, the Cuban blogger Yoani
Sánchez, just in the middle of an historic moment of diplomatic
rapprochement between Cuba and the US.”  REVISTA DE CINEMA

Thanks to migration reform in 2013 and for the first time since the
Cuban Revolution of 1959, Cubans have the opportunity to travel
abroad and come back without the governments permission. Yoani
Sánchez, the Cuban blogger who gained fame and international awards
reporting on her daily life in Cuba and harshly criticizing
socialism, was one of the first to make such a trip. This insightful
documentary follows her tour to Brazil, where she met
politicians, activists, students, and the press.

IN A FOREIGN LAND (Spain), by Iciar Bollain

“The experience of intra-European exile tackled by Spains
highest-profile female director.”  Jonathan Holland, THE
HOLLYWOOD REPORTER

Gloria is one of the 700,000 Spanish people who have left our country
since the crisis started. A native of Almería, 32, a teacher without
a posting, and a shop assistant in an Edinburgh store for the past
two years, Gloria has set up, along with the collective that she
herself launched, an action, an event which, with the motto Neither
lost nor silenced, expresses their frustration and
provides visibility and a voice to those who wish to participate,
from among the over 20,000 Spaniards in Scotlands’ capital.
