Films from the Third World Newsreel ArchivesA Public Symposium at New York
UniversityFilm Screenings, Panels and Preservation Workshop*

Presented by Third World Newsreel and NYU’s Moving Image Archiving and
Preservation Program

*Organizing/Filmmaking/Archiving: Films from the Third World Newsreel
Archives*, a public symposium to present rarely seen and recently preserved
16mm film prints from Newsreel’s and Third World Newsreel’s early days,
including the premiere of the preserved print of BREAK AND ENTER (1970)
about the fight for affordable housing in Manhattan. Award winning
filmmakers Christine Choy, Peter Barton, Stephanie Palewski, Susan Robeson,
and Deborah Shaffer will speak, along with community activists past and
present. The topics of the films – gender roles and women’s rights; racism,
mass incarceration and state violence; displacement and gentrification –
still resonate today.

The symposium is one of a series of events celebrating TWN’s commitment to
preserving its historic films as the media organization approaches its 50th
anniversary in 2018. *Organizing/Filmmaking/Archiving: Films from the Third
World Newsreel Archives* is part of *Spring Festival: Creating the Future*,
a special event of the Tisch 50th Anniversary Celebration.
