Moroccan cinema uncut: local perspectives, transnational dialogues
Marrakech, December 3-10, 2016

For the past two decades, Moroccan cinema has emerged as both a viable model for the cinemas of small nations in the Maghrebi region and beyond. This international symposium seeks to tease out the various dimensions of its success as well as the challenges faced by Moroccan producers, directors, distributors and policy-makers in the age of digital disruption.
Part of a three-year international collaborative project funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (UK), this symposium is organized in association with École Supérieure des Arts Visuels (Marrakesh), the London Film School, The University of Exeter (UK), Goucher College (USA), the Marrakech International Film Festival (Morocco) and the Africa in Motion Film Festival (Edinburgh, UK). In keeping with the aims of the project, it will bring together academics, cinema professionals, policy-makers, and critics. It will also run in conjunction with next year’s edition of the International Film Festival in Marrakech (expected to take place December 3-10, 2016*). Participants in the symposium will be able to gain professional accreditation to the festival, and sessions will be programmed to allow maximum access to festival screenings and related activities.
We welcome submissions of panels, individual papers, and round tables focusing on relevant debates on current Moroccan cinema, including the following:
- Transnational modes of (co-)production
- Independent filmmaking in the age of digital disruption
- Formal and informal networks of distribution
- The role(s) of the CCM
- National and international festivals in and outside Morocco
- Diasporic filmmakers and audiences
- The role of the critic (in)forming the identity of Moroccan cinema
- Women directors and the politics of gender representation
- Genres
- Stars
- Protecting and promoting (trans)national cinema
- Morocco as an international shooting location
We welcome proposals in the form of abstracts in English or French by March 15, 2016, to be sent electronically to both [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]> and [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>. Decisions about acceptance of abstracts and participation in the symposium will be taken by April 15, so that participants have ample time to secure funding for a conference in Morocco.
* The exact dates of the symposium will be confirmed by the end of February 2016, once we have received notification of the official dates for next year’s festival from our partners in Marrakech.

Depuis une vingtaine d’années le cinéma marocain offre un modèle viable aux cinémas du Maghreb et au-delà. Ce symposium international a pour but de définir les dimensions de son succès et de cerner les défis auxquels sont confrontés les producteurs, cinéastes, distributeurs et décideurs marocains à l’âge des perturbations numériques.
Cette rencontre fait partie d’un projet collaboratif international qui s’étale sur trois ans, financé par the Arts and Humanities Research Council (RU), avec le concours de L’École Supérieure des Arts Visuels (Marrakech), la London Film School, l’Université d’Exeter (RU), Goucher College (EU), le Festival du Film International de Marrakech (Maroc) et l’Africa in Motion Festival (Edimbourg, RU). Dans l’esprit du projet, ce symposium réunira des universitaires, des critiques, des professionnels et des décideurs du cinéma. Il se déroulera dans le cadre de la prochaine édition du Festival du Film International de Marrakech (prévue du 3 au 10 décembre 2016*). Les participants au symposium pourront obtenir une accréditation professionnelle pour assister au festival et les sessions seront programmées de façon à laisser libre accès aux visionnements des films et autres activités ancillaires du festival.

La date limite de réception des abstracts est le mardi 15 mars 2016. Les décisions concernant les abstracts et la participation au symposium seront prises avant le 15 avril, de façon à donner aux participants le temps d’assembler les fonds nécessaires pour assister à une conférence au Maroc.
*Les dates exactes du symposium seront confirmées fin février, dès que nos partenaires à Marrakech nous auront communiqué les dates officielles de la prochaine édition du festival.
