The Department of Film, Television and Digital Media within the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television invites applicants seeking a tenured or tenure-track faculty position in Documentary Production. This open rank position is responsible for teaching a variety of courses in documentary preproduction, directing, and postproduction at the BA and MFA levels. Successful applicants emphasize social responsibility in their creative work/teaching and can lead students through a range of creative and practical approaches to making documentary films with consideration for the relationships between creativity, storytelling and production feasibility. The position involves teaching skill-specific and project-oriented courses as well as an understanding and ability to teach historical and contemporary approaches to documentary filmmaking. The successful candidate will teach courses in documentary filmmaking and will be expected to participate fully in university and department service.

Graduate degree in documentary filmmaking, considerable documentary directing experience and a minimum of three years of successful teaching at the college/university level required for consideration. Special consideration will be given to candidates with significant festival, distribution and industry knowledge who actively create personal work. We are especially interested in candidates with experience in creating films with a focus on social impact and an understanding of diverse production environments and production conditions. A strong understanding of the grant and distribution process is also desirable. Documentary directing is the focus of the position; demonstrated professional and teaching capacity in related areas such as documentary cinematography and documentary postproduction is a plus. We welcome candidates whose experience in teaching, research or community service has prepared them to contribute to our commitment to diversity and excellence.
