NEWSLETTER OF THE POLITICAL FILM
SOCIETY, INC
March 1, 2013

BEST FILMS OF 2012 ANNOUNCED
Members of the Political Film Society, having cast ballots during
February, have chosen the following:
Best Film on Democracy of 2012: Lincoln (Steven Spielberg, director)
Best Film Exposé of 2012: Argo (Ben Affleck, director)
Best Film on Human Rights of 2012: West of Thunder (Steve Russell & Jody
Marriott Bar-Lev, directors)
Best Film on Peace of 2012: West of Thunder (Steve Russell & Jody Marriott
Bar-Lev, directors)
Zero Dark Thirty, though highly political, was not among the nominated
films because of the false impression in 30 minutes of film footage that
torture was legal and torturers were heroes rather than criminals. In other
words, Kathryn Bigelow’s film served propaganda purposes, approving lawbreaking
and blatant human rights violations, thereby confusing and suppressing
political enlightenment, according to Michael Haas, President of the Political
Film Society.
Established in 1986, the Political Film Society is headquartered in
Hollywood, California. One of the largest international award-granting film
societies, members consist mostly of academic professionals.
