I am looking for faculty who have recently, are currently, or will soon be
looking to revise their respective media studies (or closely related field)
curricula in order to stage a discussion on the topic of curriculum design
at SCMS 2013 in Chicago. Below is a prospective description:

"Redesigning the Media Studies Curriculum"

As the expanse of media content and platforms grows, so too does the field
of media studies. Consequent with this growth is the reengineering of
existing programs, the fragmentation of others, as well as the development
of wholly new ones. It is in this context that this workshop seeks to pull
together media studies faculty of various stripes to share their
experiences in creating, maintaining, and evolving media studies curricula
across a variety of institutions. The hope is to create a space in which a
lively discussion around curriculum design might take place, facilitating
the sharing of pedagogical approaches among peers across the discipline of
media studies at a level that is rarely achieved. Some of the potential
topics we are hoping to address in this workshop include (but are not
limited to):

-The status of film and television studies as disciplines within, apart
from, or complimentary to media studies
-The place of cultural studies and critical theory in the curriculum
-What should count as the key concepts to cover in a core curriculum?
-Media studies as an emphasis within other courses of study
-The role of interdisciplinarity in media studies
-The place of production in a studies-centric curriculum (or vice versa)
-Including and/or developing critical approaches to emerging media platforms
-Appropriateness and scheduling of screenings and ramifications of
alternative viewing/listening contexts
-Designing courses and course plans that address both transmediality and
medium specificity
-Making a curriculum relevant to student concerns and/or prospective career
paths
-Adequately covering media industries, especially when in regions where
production has little presence
-Creating programs that are simultaneously coherent to faculty,
administration, and students
-Effects of radical redesigns of existing programs
-Balancing expectations of administration when programs are allowed to grow
and develop or forced to contract
-Use of more formal methods (e.g., matrix approaches) of curriculum design

If you are interested in being a workshop participant, please email David
Gurney ([log in to unmask]) with a brief statement (no more than 250
words) describing what you would want to bring to the discussion.
