The area chair for Silent Film is putting together a special panel on the films of Oscar Micheaux specifically his silent films in celebration of Black History Month for 2010. Oscar Micheaux was truly a groundbreaking African American Filmmaker who work stands as a testament to an independent do it yourself work ethic. He worked outside the Hollywood system in a time when that was extremely difficult to do. He also made some great movies including Within Our Gates, Body and Soul (with Paul Robeson), and Murder in Harlem. Oscar Micheaux hated typical moral filmic conventions of the time and tried to best them any way he could.

We are proud to be able to put together a panel honoring this often overlooked innovator.

We welcome any topic on the films and work of Oscar Micheaux.
