*New Directions in Turkish Film Studies Conference IX: Cinema and Reality*

*2-4 May 2008 at Kadir Has University, **Istanbul***

We are pleased to announce the ninth annual *New Directions in Turkish Film
Studies Conference*. One of its kind in this field, the conference has
become a key fixture in Turkish academia since 1999. As last year, this
initially national conference will be open to submissions from scholars
worldwide this year as well. The three-day conference consists of academic
discussion sessions, panels with film industry professionals, and keynote
lectures by leading international scholars and filmmakers. Prof. Dudley
Andrew (Yale University) is among the confirmed keynote speakers.

The theme of this year's conference, as decided upon at last year's
conference, is "Cinema and Reality". Because of the camera's ability to
capture things as they happen, films are frequently considered to provide
authentic records. Yet a film is far from a simple reproduction of reality.
As a representation, a film is a formal transformation of reality. Reality
is created anew. The conference addresses the idea of "Cinema and Reality"
in both its theoretical and historical aspects. As fiction or nonfiction
films create "reality," they have the power to clarify the opaque, to give
meaning to the meaningless. What part does the ontological authority of the
iconic play in this creation? What gives legitimacy to a
documentary'sclaims to "the
real"? Is the real different in Turkey than it is in Hollywood? What role
does cinema play in defining reality? Does the creation of a distinctive
style or interpretation threaten the notion of "reality"? These are just a
few of the question that this year's theme raises.
