In Media Res Call for Curators

MediaCommons is currently seeking curators for In Media Res for the period of September 11, 2007 through December 18, 2007.

Individual submissions are welcome. We are also interested in
continuing our themed weeks in which all five curators comment on a
particular topic (ex: satire and politics, media representations of New
Orleans), television series (ex: Battlestar Galactica, CSI), or medium
(ex: videogames) and participate in a networked conversations with one
another.

If you are interested in curating for IMR or have an idea for a themed
week, please contact Avi Santo at [log in to unmask] for more information.

About In Media Res

Monday-Friday, a different media scholar will present a 30-second to
3-minute clip accompanied by a 100-150-word impressionistic response.
The goal is to promote an online dialogue amongst media scholars and
the public about contemporary media scholarship through clips chosen
for either their typicality or atypicality in demonstrating narrative
strategies, genre formulations, aesthetic choices, representational
practices, institutional approaches, fan engagements, etc.

MediaCommons is a strong advocate for the right of media scholars to
quote from the materials they analyze, as protected by the principle of
“fair use.” If such quotation is necessary to a scholar’s argument, if
the quotation serves to support a scholar’s original analysis or
pedagogical purpose, and if the quotation does not harm the market
value of the original text — but rather, and on the contrary, enhances
it — we must defend the scholar’s right to quote from the media texts
under study.
