Call for Papers

  2006 Film and History Conference
  “The Documentary Tradition”
  www.filmandhistory.org
DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS: 20 July 2006

  AREA: Peter Davis

In a 1975 Cineaste article, Peter Biskind wrote, “Hearts and Minds is the Vietnam film to end Vietnam films, a million dollar Vietnam spectacular. By deploying the vast resources of a major Hollywood production company, wildly beyond anything imaginable by the anti-war film-makers who labored doggedly on their grainy black and white documentaries during the sixties, it reveals the aspiration to have the last word, to get, finally, to the root of the problem.” As one can see, Peter Davis utilized techniques more commonly found in fictional Hollywood productions when creating his films, yet many consider him one of the foremost documentarians of the late twentieth century. Does Davis deserve this “documentarian” title? Do Davis’ politics influence the presentation of his subject matter? Does Peter Davis’ other films including, The Selling of the Pentagon (1971), Winnie and Nelson Mandela (1986), and In Darkest Hollywood: Cinema and Apartheid (1993) follow the same patterns of
Hearts and Minds (1974)? These questions along with many others spring to mind when contemplating Peter Davis and his impact on the documentary tradition, therefore, Film and History invites submissions on all aspects of Peter Davis, his films, his techniques, and his impact for its bi-annual conference.

Please submit your 200-250 word proposals to Laurie Rupert, Area Chair, Department of English, Oklahoma State University 74978 through email [log in to unmask] Panel proposals, for up to four presenters, are also welcome, but each presenter must submit his or her own paper proposal by 20 July 2006.
