Some of the issues for narrative that inevitably arrive in discussing prequels are raised in Umberto Eco's lovely essay "The Myth of Superman." He's writing about the comic book--and before the Superman franchise began reinventing itself with new "continuities"--but the points raised are generally applicable to serial fiction (Eco also discusses other examples) and by extension to the issues of prequels.

Can anyone recommend any books or articles about prequels?

Thanks,
