Historical Adventures: The Birth of a Nation to Gladiator
Graduate Student Study Day

Wednesday 1 June, 2005
(Organized by Harri Kilpi, James Russell and Jonathan Stubbs)

The School of Film and Television Studies at the University of East Anglia
is holding a study day organised by the Ph.D. students on Historical
Adventure films. From early cinema to the present, historical subjects have
been the focus of both big budget spectaculars and low budget cult films.
Although such films often focus on heroic male action, many have also been
crucial to the industry through their appeal to female audiences. While
often derided as vulgar and tasteless, many sought to associate themselves
with legitimate culture through their reliance on classic texts (Homer, the
Bible, Shakespeare) or through the portrayal of significant historical
events (the Fall of the Roman Empire, the birth of Christianity, the forging
of modern nation states). The study day will present a range of papers and
is free to all those who wish to attend, so long as you have informed us in
advance. We are particularly eager to encourage attendance by undergraduate
and graduate levels students.
