Department of Communication Studies

Announcement of Opening of two Assistant Professor Positions

Grade 23, 2 Assistant Professors, Communication Studies, College of Arts
and Sciences,

Northeastern University, located in the heart of Boston, Massachusetts,
invites applications for two tenure-track full-time assistant professor
positions in the Department of Communication Studies, beginning Fall 2005.
The Department of Communication Studies at Northeastern is an innovative,
teaching and research department comprised of three concentrations: Media
Studies, Organizational Communication and Public Communication. Its mission
is to develop both its research and teaching in a way that advances
critical thinking into practice and application. The two positions are
designed to strengthen our concentrations in both media studies and public
communication and are part of an ongoing growth and expansion of the
faculty and Northeastern University's Academic Investment Plan. A graduate
program in the area of Communication and Cultural Studies is proposed to be
launched (subject to University approval) for the fall of 2005 and
successful candidates would be expected to participate in the teaching and
supervision of graduate students as part of their duties.

Position One: Media History
We are seeking applicants with a doctorate (or the completion of the
doctorate prior to commencing the position) whose research interests and
teaching expertise address historical approaches to the media, which could
include: historical development of the media, industrial constitution of
the various media forms, or historical analysis of media texts or media
movements.

Position Two: Critical Communication Theory
We are seeking applicants with a doctorate (or completion of the doctorate
prior to commencing the position) with research and teaching expertise that
intersects with communication and cultural theory. Successful candidates
should be able to teach courses in critical theory and research methods. We
are particularly interested in candidates whose focus is on integrating
theory with direct (and alternative) social practice. Other areas of
teaching expertise may include political communication, rhetorical theory,
discourse analysis, or global communication.

Successful applicants will also have a demonstrated commitment to achieving
and maintaining diversity in higher education. Northeastern University
particularly welcomes applications from women, minorities, and persons with
disabilities. Applicants should make it clear which of the positions they
are applying for and address the selection criteria specifically in their
letter of application.
Application Deadline: Applications will be accepted until November 15,
2004. The position is contingent on final budgetary approval. Please send a
letter of application addressing the selection criteria specifically,
curriculum vitae and three references letters to:
