Farenheit 9/11

Michael Moore's new documentary has had an unprecedented impact at the box
office as of June 2004 and in doing so has brought issues in documentary
filmmaking/criticism--ones that have long informed academic discussion--
into the public eye: what constitutes a documentary, in terms of
fairness/objectivity, accuracy, rhetoric, ethics and form?

This panel will ideally examine the film from several vantage points:
possibilities include the film's formal and stylistic construction as a
rhetorical documentary (or personal essay film or "propaganda," as some in
the news media have labeled it); its relation to Moore's other films, books
or television work; its promotion and advertising relative to its
distributions difficulties; its reception in mainstream news and popular
media and/or among political pundits; and Moore's own construction as an
auteur (via television promotional appearances and in the press).

Please submit a proposal, consisting of a 400 word (maximum) paper abstract,
a bibliography (10 items maximum) and a brief biographical blurb (100 words
