Karlstad University, in collaboration with Film i Värmland and Filmform, is hosting an
international conference and retrospective about, and around, the films of Eric M Nilsson.
The conference focus on the films of Eric M Nilsson, but extends to a wider discussion of
the tradition of filmmaking sometimes referred to as essay film, subjective documentary,
or personal documentary. We have decided to use the term experimental documentary, not
only as an inclusive and non-discriminatory term, but also to place this year’s conference,
AVANT 2004 - ERIC M NILSSON AND THE EXPERIMENTAL DOCUMENTARY FILM, in relation
to the previous ones - AVANT 2002 was dedicated to the films of Gunvor Nelson, and
AVANT 2003 was dedicated to the visual work of Peter Weiss.

The conference will consist both of a series of talks and lectures, and, a series of programs
of films. The films screened will almost exclusively be by Eric M Nilsson and represents a
selection of his films made from the early 1960’s up until today. The invited speakers
include:
Barbara Abrash, (Associate Director of Center for Media, Culture, and History, New York
University)
Dominique Bluher, (Département Art du spectacle, Université Rennes 2 – Haute Bretagne)
Christa Blümlinger, (UFR Cinéma et audiovisuelle, Université de la Sorbonne Nouvelle)
Soren Birkvad, (Department for Art and Media Studies, Lillehammer College)
Joram ten Brink, (Department of Film, Music and Fashion, University of Westminster)
Jan Holmberg, (Chief Programmer at Cinemateket in Stockholm)
Stig Larsson, (writer and director)
Catherine Lupton, (Film and Television Studies, Roehampton University of Surrey)
Kristian Petri, (writer and director)
Catherine Russell, (Department for Cinema Studies, Concordia University)
Patrik Sjöberg, (Department for Culture and Communication – Film Studies, Karlstad
University)
Luis Valdovino. (Fine Arts Department, Colorado University)
Malin Wahlgren, (Department for Cinema Studies, Stockholm University)

With the exception for a panel discussion with Eric M Nilsson, which will be held in
Swedish, all presentations will be given in English.
