One good source is George Custen's "Twentieth Century's Fox," a biography of the film's producer, Darryl Zanuck, who played a much stronger role than Ford did in shaping the adaptation. Custen also has some pretty good references (for example, Steinbeck's comments on the film). See also Rudy Behlmer's "Memo From Darryl Zanuck."
