At an international conference on newsreels in London in 1996, Alexander
Kandaurov of Gosfilmofond (Russian State Film & Photo Archives) showed a
number of pieces, including 'In the Heart of Asia' (1931, dir. Vladimir
Yerofeyev), which, if my very dodgy memory serves me correctly, he said was
the first sound film made in what is now Georgia. I stress that I could
well be wrong on this point, though it was certainly one of the former
Soviet republics. After a concerted rummage through a filing cabinet in
the garage, my notes from the conference give his contact details as
follows: 1 Rechnaya St., Krasnogorsk, 143400, Russia, tel.
+95-562-1464. Given that 1929 is in roughly the same ballpark, I guess he
might be able to give you some leads.

Good luck
Leo
