WMM NEW RELEASE "ESCUELA" ON THE ACCLAIMED PBS SERIES P.O.V.

There are over 800,000 students enrolled in migrant education programs in the United States today. Many of these students come from farm-working families and labor alongside their parents and siblings to harvest fruits and vegetables throughout the year, forcing them to move according to the seasons. School boards across the country have found it difficult to meet the special needs of migrant students and, as a result, only 45-50% ever finish high school. ESCUELA, the latest documentary by award-winning filmmaker Hannah Weyer to be distributed by Women Make Movies, personalizes these glaring statistics through a poignant portrait of the struggles and triumphs of a teenage Mexican-American farmworker, Liliana Luis.

Airing on P.O.V. Tuesday, August 27, 10 pm ET (check local listings), ESCUELA was recently presented with the 2002 MTV/news/docs Award at Doubletake and the Special Jury Prize awards at the South by Southwest Film Festival.

Now available on the Women Make Movies website is a FREE Study Guide and Facilitator's Guide for ESCUELA at http://www.wmm.com/Catalog/pages/c573.htm. With easy-to-follow curriculum and discussion tips, educators and community members will find it an important tool to encourage dialogue on the numerous issues raised in the documentary.

For a schedule of P.O.V. programs on your local PBS station, visit www.pbs.org/pov. For sales and rental information on ESCUELA, please visit the Women Make Movies on-line catalogue and website at www.wmm.com.

ESCUELA is part of The Girls' Project, a collection of films and videos centered on girls' lives around the world which Women Make Movies is releasing this fall. What emerges with this collection is a portrait of global girlhood that is at once challenging, celebratory and inspiring. A mix of documentary, shorts and feature length films, THE GIRLS' PROJECT includes the most compelling titles in the Women Make Movies collection, such as MAI'S AMERICA by Marlo Poras, 5 GIRLS by Maria Finitzo and GIRLS AROUND THE WORLD, an international six-part series on 17 year olds.

Established in 1972 to address the under-representation and misrepresentation of women in the media, Women Make Movies is the largest distributor of women's films and videos in the world. Women Make Movies is now celebrating its 30th Anniversary. The year-long series of events will
