I thought members of the listserv might be interested in the film "Mai's America" airing on P.O.V. next week. Please do pass on if you think colleagues might be interested. Hope this is helpful.

WMM ANNOUNCES TV BROADCAST OF "MAI'S AMERICA" ON THE ACCLAIMED PBS SERIES P.O.V.

"The extraordinarily insightful and tender MAI'S AMERICA...is a charming and eye-opening film that could be one of the year's best documentaries."
-Steven Rosen, The Denver Post

Women Make Movies is proud to announce the upcoming P.O.V broadcast of MAI'S AMERICA by Marlo Poras (Tues, August 6th). MAI'S AMERICA is a story about a spunky, mini-skirted daughter of Ho Chi Minh's revolution who leaves cosmopolitan Hanoi on a high school exchange program and crash lands in rural Mississippi. Mai's relationships with white Pentecostal and black Baptist host families, self-proclaimed rednecks, transvestites, and South Vietnamese immigrants challenge her long-held ideas about herself, about freedom, about America, and even about Vietnam.

For a schedule of P.O.V. programs on your local PBS station, visit www.pbs.org/pov. For sales and rental information on MAI'S AMERICA please visit the Women Make Movies on-line catalogue and website at www.wmm.com.

MAI'S AMERICA is part of The Girls' Project, a collection of films and videos centered on girls' lives around the world which WMM will be releasing this fall. The films and videos in the Girls Project underline the true diversity of girls' lives around the world while highlighting how similar the issues are that affect young women today.

Women Make Movies is a national non-profit media arts organization dedicated to the production, promotion, distribution and exhibition of films and videos made by and about women. Established in 1972 to address the under-representation and misrepresentation of women in the media, Women Make Movies is the largest distributor of women's films and videos in the world. Women Make Movies launched its 30th Anniversary at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. For further information on WMM's 30th Anniversary events, visit http://www.wmm.com/news/anniversary.htm
