>Perhaps the mythology of Eisenstein's reputation mattered more for the makers of SHADOW OF THE >VAMPIRE than any semblance of historical accuracy! You're right that this is the kind of thing most reviewers never discover, just as they always accept that any "restoration" is good without bothering to compare. But the writer of the "Shadow" screenplay said in several interviews that Schreck only made one film which means this writer worked on the script a full decade without doing some elementary research on a main character. So what should we expect? However some reviewers, such as the Village Voice's J. Hoberman (who actually liked the film), did point out the Eisenstein discrepancy.
